This year marks 40 years since Ayrton Senna’s first Formula One win, an occasion that hasn’t been forgotten by the organisers at Goodwood. As part of next month’s 82nd Members’ Meeting, the Lotus 97T that the Brazilian drove to that victory will be driven around the circuit in a poignant demonstration. Making the moment all the more special will be the driver: Ayrton’s nephew, Bruno Senna, whose yellow crash helmet apes that of his uncle. It promises to be quite a spectacle.
Senna’s win at Estoril in 1985 was Team Lotus’s first victory since 1982 and the first since the death of Colin Chapman. It was a hugely important moment for the Ketteringham Hall squad and the recreation of the event will be a must-see for any Lotus enthusiasts who are at this year’s Goodwood Members’ Meeting.
With an 800bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with a 12,500rpm redline, it’s going to be a sight and sound to remember, recreating one of Formula One’s most spectacular eras. What’s more, it’s a JPS livery driven by a Senna with a yellow crash helmet. After Goodwood, the 97T departs for Estoril where it will be demonstrated once again by Bruno Senna. Evocative stuff.
Absolute Lotus is the bi-monthly magazine for Lotus owners and enthusiasts. The current issue contains a profile on Ayrton Senna’s time at Team Lotus written by Richard Heseltine, and is available here.
