Video: Plucky Lotus Elan battles AC Cobra

One of the greatest spectacles provided by historic motorsport is the little versus large battles, Whether it’s Minis going up against V8 saloons or nimbles Lotuses battling big-banger GT cars. Throwing together grid of cars that approach the business of going fast in completely different ways always provides spectacular, close racing.

This on-board video from the Lotus Elan of Nigel Greensall provides exactly that. This was the Graham Hill Trophy for 1960s GT cars from this year’s Goodwood Members’ Meeting where the Cheshunt machine finds itself battling a Shelby Cobra. The former clearly has the advantage on the straights, but under braking and during cornering the little Lotus keeps the more powerful machine honest. The battle becomes a three-way at time, with a Porsche 904 joining the fray. More Lotus than Shelby, the Stuttgart machines puts on a display of litheness and we have a better-than-grandstand view of it.

We won’t give you any spoilers here, save to say that the action peaks as the video reaches the six-minute mark. But don’t skip to that point – enjoy the build-up as the car’s cat-and-mouse chase around the West Sussex circuit. You’ll be riding on board during the fastest ever lap of Goodwood set by a Lotus Elan.
